Jessica Fancy-Landry: Your Voice for South Shore-St. Margarets
Deep Roots in Our Community
I'm Jessica Fancy-Landry, and I'm proud to be your Liberal candidate for South Shore-St. Margarets. This isn't just another riding to me—it's my home. Growing up on a button mushroom farm in Caledonia, Queens County, I learned early about the values that define our region: hard work, resilience, and community spirit.
For the past 15 years, I've called Bridgewater home, raising my family and building deep connections throughout our communities. From raking blueberries for van Dyk's as a student to my 16 years as an educator with the South Shore Regional Centre for Education, my life has been intertwined with the fabric of this beautiful coastal region.
Understanding Our Unique Region
South Shore-St. Margarets stretches from Tantallon to Barrington, encompassing some of Nova Scotia's most picturesque coastal communities, vibrant small towns, and hardworking rural villages:
- Hubbards & St. Margarets Bay – A coastal treasure, Hubbards is known for its stunning beaches, including Queensland Beach and Fox Point Beach, a lively farmers' market, and a strong community spirit. This area is a gateway to the South Shore and a favorite summer destination for visitors.
- Tantallon – Just outside of Halifax, Tantallon is a growing community with a balance of modern amenities and natural beauty. It serves as a key access point to St. Margaret's Bay, home to stunning ocean views and outdoor recreation.
- Chester & Western Shore – Known for sailing, vibrant arts, and the famous Oak Island, Chester is a historic seaside town that blends heritage with modern luxury.
- Mahone Bay – With its iconic three churches, boutique shops, and artistic culture, Mahone Bay is a must-visit for tourists and a beloved home for locals.
- Lunenburg – A UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the Bluenose II, this town is famous for its colorful waterfront, rich fishing heritage, and culinary excellence.
- Bridgewater – The largest town in the district, Bridgewater is a hub for commerce, healthcare, and education, making it the backbone of the South Shore's economy.
- Liverpool & Queens County – A deep-rooted history in privateering, stunning beaches like Summerville and White Point, and a strong cultural scene make Liverpool a standout.
- Shelburne – This coastal gem features one of the best-preserved Loyalist-era streetscapes in Canada and is a key center for Nova Scotia's boat-building industry.
- Barrington – The Lobster Capital of Canada, Barrington is home to some of the most hardworking fishing families in the country, sustaining the region's economy and culture.
- New Germany & New Ross – These inland communities offer a glimpse into Nova Scotia's agricultural traditions, rich forestry history, and strong community values.
- Port Medway, Port Mouton & Sable River – Beautiful, small coastal villages that are deeply connected to Nova Scotia's fishing and maritime industries.
- Caledonia & North Queens – The heart of Kejimkujik National Park, this area is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts looking to explore Nova Scotia's natural beauty.
- Boutilier's Point, Fox Point, & Hackett's Cove – These smaller communities in St. Margaret's Bay offer breathtaking ocean views, outdoor recreation, and a strong sense of local pride.
As someone who has spent summers working at Kejimkujik National Park, I've experienced firsthand the importance of protecting our natural heritage while balancing economic growth.
A Champion for Rural Communities
As Board Chair of the Rural Communities Foundation of Nova Scotia, I've helped direct over $2.1 million in grants back to rural Nova Scotians. I'm proud to have been the grassroots creator of the David Gunning Zero Hunger Campaign to address student food insecurity, raising over $400,000 to help fight hunger in our schools.
My research on rural education has earned recognition, including a Fellowship from Memorial University for my thesis on "Prioritization of Rural Youth in Nova Scotia: Understanding Rural School Success with Policy Gaps." This isn't just academic work—it's about understanding the real challenges our communities face and finding practical solutions.
My Vision for South Shore-St. Margaret's
I believe in the #FancyCARES approach to representation:
- Community: Benefiting families and strengthening community bonds across our riding
- Affordability: Addressing the cost of living challenges that affect us all
- Responsiveness: Improving healthcare access, addressing school needs, and tackling housing concerns
- Engagement: Reconnecting with constituents to combat misinformation and develop effective policies
- Service: Rolling up my sleeves to work directly with communities on the issues that matter most
A Future Built on Our Values
South Shore-St. Margarets faces both challenges and opportunities—from affordability and healthcare access to economic development and environmental protection. I've dedicated my career to advocating for rural populations who often get overlooked in policy support structures.
As someone who has "walked the walk"—putting myself through school, building a career as an educator, volunteering, and giving back—I understand that policies are just pieces of paper until they're paired with action and advocacy. That's the kind of representative I promise to be.
I'm not a political insider with family connections. I've built my reputation through work ethic, interpersonal skills, and tenacity. I believe I offer a picture that everyone can see themselves in—someone with firm rural roots who understands the challenges and opportunities facing our communities.
It's time for South Shore-St. Margarets to have a representative who truly understands the heart of this region, from our fishing wharves to our farming communities, from our tourist destinations to our small business corridors.
I'm ready to be your voice in Ottawa, and I hope to earn your support as we work together to build a stronger South Shore-St. Margarets.
